Nationwide training and certification program offers intensive audio training classes
Introduced in February with its first classes in Van Nuys, California, Allen & Heath Academy offers attendees formal training spreading across a broad range of Allen & Heath products as well as live sound practices in general. Presented by Allen & Heath USA in cooperation with its regional network of independent sales representatives all across the country, the workshops are based around in-person academy training as well as online testing, all of which lead to official certification and AVIXA CTS RUs.
We’ve intentionally given this program some real depth in terms of its size, scope, and content, Allen & Heath USA Marketing Manager Jeff Hawley said. “It’s all part of our company efforts to advance the entire industry’s knowledge base not only on dLive and our other trendsetting products, but on new ways of thinking about workflow and networked systems in general.”
Skilled audio professionals and legendary touring sound veterans are leading dozens of academy sessions that have already attracted hundreds of attendees this season. Notable among the group is featured presenter Michael Bangs, whose 20+ year career includes experiences as a monitor engineer and production manager for A-list acts including Aerosmith, Eric Clapton, Katy Perry, Tom Petty, Kid Rock, and Lynyrd Skynyrd. An early advocate of live digital mixing, Bangs assisted a multitude of others in making the transition from analog in the early 2000s. A pioneer in surfaceless mixing that naturally gravitated to Allen & Heath, he built a close relationship with the manufacturer and ultimately joined the company to provide support to those on the road using dLive mixing systems.
“Being part of the Allen & Heath Academy offers me the unique opportunity to meet and work with some of the brightest engineers in our industry,” Bangs said, commenting upon his role within the training initiative. “We have a lot to offer everyone with these classes beyond simple certification—this is a chance for anyone who’s serious about their work and career to truly expand their skills, learn new techniques, and strike a creative spark within themselves and among their peers.”
Beyond touring FOH and monitor engineers, consultants, integrators, house of worship production team members, and those within the rental community, all stand to gain by enrolling for academy sessions. Most sessions are free to attend. To obtain Allen & Heath Academy dates and locations as well as all other

Linköping, Sweden, February 21st, 2020. A highly versatile mojo machine, capable of replacing multiple plug-ins in a chain – EQ, distortion, transient designer, you name it – the Chandler Limited® Germanium Compressor is so much more than gain reduction. Engineered with an ear for music before mathematics, this is a trusty companion for producers, recording engineers, and creative musicians of all kinds.
This is a meticulous model of the Chandler Limited® hardware, tested in our lab to ensure it performs like the hardware does, for the same excellent sound quality and inspiring vibe.
The Germanium Compressor’s unique character comes from a blend of several innovative approaches. The ratio settings are tuned by ear rather than arithmetic. The dial takes you from less to more rather than fixing on especially precise numerical values. And what does it matter as long as it sounds fantastic? Knee settings are similarly artistic, named as they are after the different combinations of diodes which achieve each color of curve.
With a FET gain reduction element, the Germanium is capable of fast and heavily-saturating compression. So there’s a choice of clean or dirty compression, toggling between modes which compensate to varying degrees for the harmonic excitement naturally brought about by the unit. It’s never transparent, but you have a lot of control over Total Harmonic Distortion (THD) in this compressor.
You also have control over the speed of operation – the attack and release times can be combined to extremely musical effect. Ease off on the attack and the Germanium Compressor becomes a punchy powerhouse for drums. Slow down the release and creamy, smooth tones can be introduced to vocals or bass. Acoustic guitar can be brightened and tightened, or rock axe heated and seated in a dense mix.
The Germanium in software lets the user take advantage of exclusive features: Mid/Side Processing and External Sidechain allow you to make better-sounding mixes than ever before.
And every track this thing touches will benefit from the drive and feedback on output – this is the real secret sauce. A gain circuit which can gently caress a signal as easily as it can sizzle and sear it into submission.
All the character, the musicality, the fun of the original hardware Germanium Compressor from Chandler Limited® is right here. Whatever flavor of music you’re making, add this sound to the recipe.

Neu-Anspach – 26 February 2020 – in light of recent developments in the COVID-19 virus, the Adam Hall Group has decided not to participate in this year's Prolight + Sound (31 March – 3 April 2020) in Frankfurt am Main. In doing so, the event technology provider based in Neu-Anspach, Hessen, is following the most recent preventive recommendations from the health authorities for responsible protection of employees, partners and trade show visitors. Instead, the Adam Hall Group will present numerous innovations from its extensive event technology range in a livestream on 31 March 2020 on the company website.
"We have been an integral part of the music trade show Prolight + Sound for 38 years. Every year we look forward to meeting our partners and customers in Frankfurt am Main and being able to present our latest innovations. But an entertainment trade show needs a certain sense of fun that is so essential to our industry as a whole. Ongoing concerns and precautionary measures associated with the COVID-19 virus mean that this light-heartedness isn't possible in light of the latest developments. We have made this difficult decision because we attach great importance to the safety and well-being of our employees, business partners and end user as well as media partners," says Alexander Pietschmann, CEO of the Adam Hall Group.
The livestream with all product highlights from the brands Cameo, LD Systems, Gravity, Defender and Palmer will start on 31 March 2020 at 10:00 am CET at www.adamhall.com/virtualtradeshow

Baton Rouge, Louisiana—February 2020… Once upon a time, there was a family of Eris who lived at PreSonus down on the Louisiana bayou. There was a great big Eris named E8 XT; a middle-sized Eris named E7 XT, who just recently joined the family; and the cher petite E5 XT. The Eris family also had two sets of nearly identical twins: Eris E4.5 and E4.5 BT and Eris E3.5 and E3.5 BT. (The Eris family included two cousins, E44 and E66, but that’s a story for another night.) Over the years, the Eris family became very popular on the bayou and far beyond, and for good reasons.
Eris E8 XT is very powerful indeed, and his 8-inch woven composite woofer and large size results in a deep rich voice that reaches all the way down to 35 Hz. His voice is best appreciated in a moderately large studio space for those that appreciate a big bass sound. Eris E5 XT, with his 5-inch woofer, sounds great in smaller spaces, such as bedroom studios, but his voice doesn’t reach as low as the mighty E8 XT, and he might be too small to fill large studio spaces.
The newest member of the family, Eris E7 XT, is just right for moderate-size and some mid-large studio spaces. With her 7-inch woofer and 1.25-inch silk dome tweeter, E7 XT’s voice is significantly more powerful and richer than that of the smaller Eris family members, though not quite as deep as the E8 XT’s. Featuring the same 140W of Class AB biamped power as the E8 XT, the E7 XT can deliver tight, focused bass down to 42 Hz despite her compact form factor. And just like the E8 XT and E5 XT, Eris E7 XT is equipped with PreSonus’ custom Elliptically Boundary Modeled waveguide, which enables her to be clearly and accurately heard across a wide 100 degree “sweet spot” with a focused 60˚ in the vertical to minimize desk reflections and maximize performance.
Whether singing at the top in her range or hitting the low notes, Eris E7 XT always delivers the truth. If you need to bring an instrument up or down in a mix or your EQ’ing is off, she’ll let you know. Like the E8 XT and E5 XT, she is extremely flexible, offering acoustic tuning controls that enable you to adapt her voice to the room’s response and to placement close to walls or corners, and she accepts input via XLR, TRS, and RCA connections.
Eris E7 XT is available now at your favorite PreSonus dealer at an expected U.S. street price of $229.95 each.

SQ-5 console and GX4816 audio expander connect with performing legends
Picture this, if you will: Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis Jr., Marilyn Monroe, and Bob Hope all performing onstage in a one-night only show. This could only happen at the Sands or somewhere else on the Las Vegas Strip of the late ‘50s, right? No, try a rodeo arena in Colorado, where The Ultimate USO Show made a stop not long ago at the Estes Park Fairgrounds and Events Center. Showcased by Rat Pack Events and Cal Neva Entertainment, the living tribute came to life using an Allen & Heath SQ-5 mixer and GX4816 stage box.
"I was basically a one-man band when it came to running this show’s audio,” notes Neal Johnson, who took a break from his usual duties as a systems designer in the Denver office of Clearwing Productions to manage the task. “To compound matters, shortly after I arrived I was informed that horses were going to be traveling through my cable path at times, and I couldn’t bury my lines. It’s a good thing I had the SQ-5, because all I had to do was disconnect a single Cat5 cable, then plug it back in once they had passed. I didn’t have to worry about not having enough manpower to deal with restoring cumbersome patching each time.”
The SQ-5 was provided by allies to the cause Dean Hinton and Travis Stefl from Louisville, Colorado-based Pro Tech Marketing. With 14 inputs coming from the stage for star vocals and The Ron Davis Big Band, Johnson managed four monitor mixes with the SQ-5 as well.
“I used virtually every feature the desk had,” he explains. “Its peak/RMS compressor, four-band parametric EQ, a raft of vintage outboard hardware emulations, gated reverbs, and delays from the RackExtra FX package it is equipped with right out of the box. Filling the outdoor dimensions of the space properly would have been difficult without all those tools at my disposal.” Confined to a working area in the grandstands no bigger than the compact SQ-5 itself, Johnson utilized Allen & Heath’s SQ MixPad app to access the console remotely while dialing-in the wedge monitors onstage.
“Even working alone I nailed it all pretty quickly,” he adds. “It’s much easier when you can stand right next to the performers and ask them what they want to hear. I initially thought I was bringing more console than I needed. But if I ever find myself in a situation like this again, I won’t leave home without it.”

PRAGUE, CZECH REPUBLIC: newly-founded federation United Plugins is proud to announce availability of the seventh plugin release to its collective name (since launching last year) with FirePresser — founding independent developer FireSonic’s fresh take on compression as an advanced serial multi-compressor plugin suitable for every situation where compression is needed — as of February 25…
As any serious mix and/or recording engineer worth their salt should surely know, natural yet powerful sounding compression can be achieved by using multiple hardware compressors in series — several compressor plugins positioned as DAW (Digital Audio Workstation) track inserts will do the trick, too. Today, however, there is no need necessarily to go to such extreme lengths to achieve this, thanks to the timely introduction of FirePresser.
For every situation where compression is needed, FirePresser — FireSonic’s third plugin release in close collaboration with United Plugins — provides easy access to exacting emulations of four iconic analogue compressors, clearly labelled (left to right) as VARIMU (coloured green), STRESS (coloured red), DB160 (coloured blue), and 76 (coloured yellow) in an uncomplicated user interface that allows all of them to be blended with the greatest of ease, letting lush analogue- sounding compression weave its musical magic upon any source material in next to no time at all. Anyone at all familiar with the iconic analogue compressors being emulated by FirePresser will readily recognise their corresponding compression characteristics.
Clearly, though, there’s a whole lot more to the superficially-straightforward FirePresser than executing exacting emulations alone. Ultimately, users can quickly rearrange the order of those compressors with simple drag and drop movements. Meanwhile, FirePresser’s so-called Rainbow Pad provides further control over the amount of presence each compressor in the chain as arranged is having, helpfully reflected visually by blending their associated primary colours on screen. But better still, drag just one parameter to simultaneously control all four compressors and achieve the best results — speedy, simple, and smart!
Though the overall effect of FirePresser is instant, some skilled users might choose to work with the DETECTOR controls, connecting them to the advanced features of all engaged compressors at the same time. That said, FirePresser’s overall effect can be also accentuated by dialling in the TURBO knob to squash sounds further still, seasoned by pleasing analogue saturation.
Fortunately, FirePresser comes preloaded with a lot of professionally-programmed presets, perfect for tackling almost any studio scenario. Saying that, then, for most users it’s simply a case of loading a preset and adjusting the DRY / WET knob to always achieve fantastic-sounding results. As an advanced serial multi- compressor plugin suitable for every situation where compression is needed, FirePresser is both a real time-saver and a no-brainer — perfectly priced to go (forth and multiply in most major DAWs on macOS and Windows, using internal 64-bit audio processing handling any sample rates up to 192kHz and beyond)!
FireSonic’s FirePresser is available to purchase for a time-limited introductory promo price of €59.00 EUR ($66.00 USD) until March 10, 2020 — rising thereafter to €99.00 EUR ($110.00 USD) — as an AAX-, AU-, and VST-compatible audio plug-in directly from United Plugins here: https://unitedplugins.com/FirePresser/ (Note that a 15-day, fully-functional trial version for macOS and Windows can be downloaded for free.)

Newport News, VA—Like many houses of worship, the Calvary Chapel didn't start out as a large congregation, it worked its way into becoming one. Having revitalized a site that was once a shopping center, today the church has seating for 1400 in its main sanctuary, a 600-capacity fellowship hall, and a vibrant youth ministry. Allen & Heath components including a dLive C3500, multiple SQ-5, and ME-1 mixing systems spread out across the entire campus, fulfilling the needs of audio events large and small.
“By design, Allen & Heath mixing systems are truly multifaceted within this application,” explains Bart Cardea of Providential Integration Concepts, the Chesapeake, Virginia-based firm tasked with developing the church’s audio blueprint. “Throughout the construction phases of its campus, the church held to a conviction that high-quality audio was something that should serve every worship space, not just the main sanctuary. When it came to the controlling end of that equation, high channel count flexibility was a very real necessity, not just an abstract concept.”
With installation of the Providential Integration Concepts design managed by Matt Stairs of Sunset Sound of Virginia Beach, audio signals route via Dante throughout the plan. The church’s dLive C3500 control surface stands at front of house in the sanctuary, joined by a DM64 MixRack at the stage, which often hosts major faith-based musicians from around the country. The first of three SQ-5 mixers on-campus handles the sanctuary monitor mix, while the second and third are respectively deployed in the fellowship hall and youth room. A total of eight ME-1 personal mixers reside on the sanctuary stage, used for both regular services and visiting performers.
“If anything,” says Calvary Chapel technical director Tony Lewis, “Allen & Heath has allowed us to expand at our own pace, growing into a future where we always can accommodate a larger sonic vision. From the speed of our workflow to our ability to configure these systems in a fashion that suits the working style of any of our own staff members and visiting engineers, there isn’t seemingly anything within our audio chain that hasn’t improved. We have pristine 96kHz performance. Countless compliments come our way from guest artists and engineers on the lack of coloration, and how easy it is to dial-in their sound to levels they usually only obtain in a studio setting.”

IK also used its award-winning physical modelling techniques to recreate each studio's vintage customized consoles (an API-based Sunset Sound custom, a Class-A-Discrete Neve® 8880 and an API/DeMedio® Sunset Sound Custom), preamplifier and signal path, to add the perfect harmonic elements and sonic signature. All together, this results in a faithful studio quality reverb that adds a very special warmth and tone while also offering the same signature ambient sound as the timeless records that were recorded at the studio for decades by top artists and bands. All of this is complemented by an array of flexible control options for further tone shaping.
Studio owner Paul Camarata notes, "For 60 years, the sound of our studios has been heard on hit records around the world. Now, we're proud to be working with IK Multimedia to bring our famed sound to everyone's recordings. Sunset Sound Studio Reverb really nails the essence of our distinct character."

Seoul, South Korea, February 2020... Audioguy Studios in the heart of Seoul is a unique recording space which has taken a different approach to many Korean studios. Focusing on acoustic music including classical jazz andthe ‘Gukak’ style of Korean classical music, the facility has chosen a Genelec 7.1.4 monitoring system based around ‘The Ones’ coaxial three-way monitors, to enable it to fully embrace immersive recording techniques.
The main recording space at Audioguydiffers from others in the country since it consists of one large room which accommodates multiple artists together –rather than a series of isolated recording booths. By adopting this approach, the studio has been able to take advantage of the unique acoustic qualities of its recording room. “Typically, studios make the reverberation time as short as possible in order to record mostly the direct sound from the source, whereas Audioguy has a longer reverberation time of 2.7 seconds, more like a concert hall,” explains Jung-Hoon Choi, founder of Audioguy Studios. “We are able to record not only the direct sound from the source to the mic, but also a lot of reflected sound from the walls, ceiling and the floor. Our intention here is to produce music with a unique and colourful sound.
”This kind of environment has made recording in 7.1.4 an interesting process. “With the very long reverberation time, our recordings can emphasise the full benefits of 7.1.4 immersive audio by capturing all the resonances and the reverberation of the room,” says Choi. “We can record using an ambisonic microphone to capture the immersive atmosphere, and spot mics to capture the individual instruments. However, the ambisonic and spot mics tend not to blend well together, so we havetried to separate the two different microphone configurations by using the ambisonic mic to cover the .4 channel content, as well as the rear channel source. The front and side sources are then covered by the additional spot mics next to the instruments in order to capture the unique and atmospheric feel of the content.
”The results of this process are monitored and mixed using Genelec coaxial Smart Active Monitors, supplied by Genelec’s local Korean distribution partner Sama Sound. The system comprises three 8351As as LCR, eight 8331A monitors as surrounds and overheads –with a 7370A subwoofer handling LF duties, and the entire system configured, calibrated and controlled using Genelec GLM software.
“When you need to mix 7.1.4 immersive audio properly in a limited space, accurate monitoring is essential. The Ones’ point source quality is a must, and I would be very confused when making mix decisions without the standardised in-situ corrections of frequency response, level and delay offered by Genelec’s GLM software,” reflects Choi. “Using this system, the 11 individual monitors sound exactly as they should -which is very much focused. So, we can mix in the most precise and accurate way, and when the mixing is done, GLM makes it very convenient and easy to switch between 3D, binaural and stereo formats and analyse the differences.
”Having supplied the system, Sama Sound have themselves been able to deploy the studios as the perfect location for listening sessions and seminars, such is the extremely high quality of the monitoring environment. Looking to the future, Choi is also determined to get the best out of the new setup at Audioguy Studios. “As we now have this beautiful 7.1.4 immersive audio system, we will be actively recording, mixing and mastering more immersive audio content,” he states. “Aside from their extraordinary accuracy, it’s actually very interesting and fun to work with Genelec monitors!”

Linköping, Sweden, February 7th, 2020. Heritage meets rock & roll science. When you think guitar amplifiers, chances are you think Marshall. For many years Softube have partnered Marshall in all things software, and now two new native Marshall amplifier plug-ins are hitting the scene.
To begin with, now available natively for the first time, the Marshall Plexi Super Lead 1959. Modeled on Marshall’s own reference unit, a pristine 1967 amp from their museum, and combined with an era-appropriate 1960BHW 4x12” cabinet which was recorded by legendary AC/DC engineer Tony Platt, this is a must-have amp for classic and modern tones alike.
Marshall Plexi Super Lead 1959
Marshall Plexi Super Lead 1959 mixer
And as if that wasn’t enough, Softube have worked in tandem with his majesty, the undisputed Kerry King of thrash metal, to model an exact replica of his signature guitar amplifier, the Marshall 2203KK, a.k.a. “The Beast”. Not only component-modeling the insanely powerful amplifier itself, right down to its KT88 power tubes and hand-wired circuit, but also going into the studio and out on the road with Kerry, to capture cabinet responses and microphone combinations for both live and recording situations.
Kerry King Signature
You’ll love the realism, both sonic and visual. You’ll love the flexibility, and the depth of the sound at any setting. Most of all, you’ll love the way your music sounds through these epic setups.
Iisalmi, Finland, February 2020... Genelec – the global leader in professional audio monitoring has signalled a new era of sustainable growth with the opening of a brand new extension to its lakeside factory in Iisalmi, Finland. Utilising the latest technologies, the extension will significantly increase the space, flexibilityand efficiency of the company’s warehousing and logistics operations, while ensuring that the entire facility is now powered exclusively by sustainable sources including solar, wind and hydroelectric energy.
For over four decades Genelec has consistently followed a path of sustainable development and environmental responsibility, and has made recycled materials, low energy consumption and long product lifespan central to its design philosophy. The current factory by Porovesi Lake in Iisalmi was built in 1985 with an architectural design that complements its beautiful natural surroundings, and was designed to significantly reduce energywastage through its use ofheat recovery and generous insulation of walls, ceiling and windows. The factory moved from oil to a combination of wind and hydroelectric energy supply many years ago, and the new extension now brings solar energy to the mix courtesy of over 450 roof-mounted solar panels which will supply 30% of Genelec’s annual power.
The expansion project was managed by Genelec Development Engineer Annika Hujanen, and provides almost 2000 sq.m of floor space for warehousing and logistics alone, with considerable additional space for customer support offices, a centralised automation control centreand efficient waste processing. In keeping with Genelec’s environmental policies all architects, designers and contractors were chosen for the project based on both their sustainability credentials and their close proximity to Iisalmi, resulting in less travel, better material logistics, and reducedwaste and CO2 emissions. The expansion also enables consolidation of Genelec’s external warehouses, offering furtherimprovements in the efficiencyof material flow, lean manufacturingand reductions in waste and power consumption.
Commenting on the project, Hujanen explains:
“We take our responsibilities to the local community very seriously, so we were really excited to see all the people involved joining forces with usto contribute to the eco-system here in Iisalmi in a sustainable and innovative way. The work was completed on time, on budget and to a fantastically high standard. We’re really proud of what the entire team has achieved.”
Genelec Managing Director Siamak Naghian adds:
“For over four decades, total quality and sustainability have been core principles of Genelec’s philosophy. The company has strategicallyregardedenvironmental issues as being equally important as profitability, and while our consistent growth in business has been the catalyst for this factory expansion, that growth has to be maintained sustainably. Continuing to keepour entire manufacturing base here in Iisalmi means that we can always guarantee not only the premium total quality of our products, but also that our entire design and manufacturing process helps to conserve our precious natural resources.”
